I was inspired today by an old piece of sheet music! Entitled "Girl of Mine", it seemed a natural backdrop to some more romantic items I have collected for assemblage and collage. I used the sweet vintage millinery flowers I found antiquing a couple of weeks ago, a vintage photo folder, ephemera, a pretty piece of old hardware, vintage seam binding and lace, and topped it off with domed glass reclaimed from a vintage alarm clock. It was constructed on a stretched 8 x 10 canvas. It was a fun project and I enjoyed seeing how I could re-use old goodies! Hope you all have a GREAT weekend!

Lovely! I especially like the way you used glass, and I love the gentleness of this collage... The girl is beautiful...
ReplyDeleteThat is beautiful! Such a pretty collage--love the glass!

Hi Linda, Thanks for your concern for my Miley. That is sweet of you.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I was at the thrift today and saw frames for collages. I don't do them but I wondered about them. Yours are beautiful and a great inspiration.
Exquisitely beautiful. I love that it's encased by it's glass dome -preserved forever.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the glass dome really enhances this piece! Lovely! I've been wondering, do you always use the original piece of music, or do you scan it and print out a copy to use so you will always have it?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nice comments! Becca,
ReplyDeleteSometimes, I use all original ephemera, other times a combination with scans. On this collage, I used the vintage sheet music- it was in very bad condition- but I scanned it to my computer, so I could keep the design. The old lotto card is original- I specialize in game pieces for sale so I have a lot of those. The butterfly was off a page I scanned from a dictionary. I print in color on cotton resume paper and it gives a good result. The French piece was from a download from shabby chic papirskatter- she is on my blogroll and really has some pretty downloads- I've found some great French ephemera there. The girl is a scan from an old French postcard- my daughter is a collector and there is NO way she will let me use one of her originals. It is actually printed on photo paper, so it still looks like an old French postcard. I've seen many bloggers online who offer free downloads of French postcards, too. I only decoupage over thin paper pieces- not thick cards, folders or photos- and I use matte finish. The accent pieces- flowers, lace, ribbon, hardware and the glass on this one are vintage, but I'm sure there are good new choices, too! It is a lot of fun to make these! In the future, I think instead of stretched canvas, I'm going to use canvasboard- it would be much easier to frame.
Hi Linda-
ReplyDeletethat certainly is darling. I like the clock face too adds such interest to the whole piece.
I'm wondering how do you attach all these things together and make them stay? are they in a shadow box? or an open (no glass) frame? or just canvas?
I find this art form so interesting.
thanks for visiting my blog- and I can't remember if I welcomed you as a follower of mine...but thanks! and welcome! ;)
I use Aleene's Instant Decoupage Water-Based Glue, Sealer and Finish in Matte, for attaching paper to my canvas. I also coat the top of the thin papers. I smooth the wrinkles as much as possible, but the paper really tightens up nice when dry. Aleene's dries pretty quickly. I use a hot glue gun for attaching the heavier or more 3-D pieces- it certainly helps if they have a flat section for attaching. With a stretched canvas, you could probably even wire a piece on! I just use an open frame, or even just hang the canvas, but I'm sure these could be placed in shadow boxes with glass for protection. Thanks again! Linda
ReplyDeleteOh how lovely! Well done! I always think about making things like this but cannot get it all together!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Lisa
Such a beautiful creation! ~ Angela
ReplyDeleteLove your collage. So sweet. I collect tole trays too. Back in the old days they were cheap and plentiful. If you ever want to get rid of any let me know. I especially love the black ones. That rectangular one is unique. Love it! Mimi
ReplyDeleteOh, I really like the glass over the collage-what a great and interesting piece to put in!!
ReplyDeleteLynn
Dear Linda, it is masterly beautifull, I so love the glass dome, and the whole collage is full of beauty, and wonderfull eye-candy.

I LOVE this! That domed glass gives it such an old- time, nostalgic quality. You are so creative and talented!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Thanks so much to you all for your nice compliments!
ReplyDeleteI have a sheet titled "My Little Girl" that I am saving for a special collage too. Its great when you come across such a perfect title!
ReplyDeleteThe glass dome alarm clock truly sets this off. Beautiful details...I wouldn't think to use all those things together.
ReplyDeleteLinda,
ReplyDeleteThis collage is really lovely. That piece of glass is incredible...what a touch! Thank you so much for stopping by our new blog. I am so thrilled that Lynn put us on her blog...what a terrific woman!
And now I am going to settle in and read your blog. I love reading blogs. I hope I don't forget how to read books!
Hugs,
Kat and Suz
That is really beautiful. I was going to ask you for the details on how you get it to stay together, but I see you have already answered my question in comments. You're a step ahead of me :).
ReplyDeleteI really love the way you layer these items together. I would think that restraint would be necessary. My problem with the last collage which I tried was that I kept adding and adding "stuff". It was nothing at all like yours.
I'm really impressed!
Linda...It's just beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteThis is going straight into my inspiration file. I love it!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week!
Anne
Linda,
ReplyDeleteThis piece is just beautiful. I love all of the elements you used to create this. I agree with the others that the crowning piece was the clock dome....a perfect touch!!
Jane
Linda,
ReplyDeleteHow creative and beautiful. Thanks for the kind words about my cold. It is foggy and drizzly here in Illinois, so a good day to stay in.
Thanks for telling us about your scanning vs original decisions. I am going back and forth on this as well. I find the originals to be so much more satisfying in their look. I think I need to get my techniques down better to make the reproductions look better.
ReplyDeleteNothing like a top notch scanner!
I agree with the others, the glass dome really tops it off.
Kim
Linda, it truly is beautiful!!!

I genuinely like your collages - bits and bobs of things which make a warm scene. So many collages others make are unhappy subject matter or just scrawl of lines with scramble of junk on it. Rather harsh, when what I wanted to say is I really like your "cleaner" collages.
