ReplyDeleteSometimes, I use all original ephemera, other times a combination with scans. On this collage, I used the vintage sheet music- it was in very bad condition- but I scanned it to my computer, so I could keep the design. The old lotto card is original- I specialize in game pieces for sale so I have a lot of those. The butterfly was off a page I scanned from a dictionary. I print in color on cotton resume paper and it gives a good result. The French piece was from a download from shabby chic papirskatter- she is on my blogroll and really has some pretty downloads- I've found some great French ephemera there. The girl is a scan from an old French postcard- my daughter is a collector and there is NO way she will let me use one of her originals. It is actually printed on photo paper, so it still looks like an old French postcard. I've seen many bloggers online who offer free downloads of French postcards, too. I only decoupage over thin paper pieces- not thick cards, folders or photos- and I use matte finish. The accent pieces- flowers, lace, ribbon, hardware and the glass on this one are vintage, but I'm sure there are good new choices, too! It is a lot of fun to make these! In the future, I think instead of stretched canvas, I'm going to use canvasboard- it would be much easier to frame.

I'm wondering how do you attach all these things together and make them stay? are they in a shadow box? or an open (no glass) frame? or just canvas?
I find this art form so interesting.

I use Aleene's Instant Decoupage Water-Based Glue, Sealer and Finish in Matte, for attaching paper to my canvas. I also coat the top of the thin papers. I smooth the wrinkles as much as possible, but the paper really tightens up nice when dry. Aleene's dries pretty quickly. I use a hot glue gun for attaching the heavier or more 3-D pieces- it certainly helps if they have a flat section for attaching. With a stretched canvas, you could probably even wire a piece on! I just use an open frame, or even just hang the canvas, but I'm sure these could be placed in shadow boxes with glass for protection. Thanks again! Linda

ReplyDeleteI really love the way you layer these items together. I would think that restraint would be necessary. My problem with the last collage which I tried was that I kept adding and adding "stuff". It was nothing at all like yours.

Thanks for telling us about your scanning vs original decisions. I am going back and forth on this as well. I find the originals to be so much more satisfying in their look. I think I need to get my techniques down better to make the reproductions look better.

I genuinely like your collages - bits and bobs of things which make a warm scene. So many collages others make are unhappy subject matter or just scrawl of lines with scramble of junk on it. Rather harsh, when what I wanted to say is I really like your "cleaner" collages.
