I recently finished a fun hutch makeover for my daughter-in-law! I started with her 70's-80's era hutch made of nice sturdy wood...but which definitely had a dated look,
and a finish that had seen better days.
I chose three DecoArt Americana products~
starting with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Carbon...
After painting, I sealed the interior, where it would get a lot of storage use, with Americana Decor Light Satin Varnish. The exterior, I sealed with Americana Decor Creme Wax, and buffed with a soft rag.
I love the soft, protective finish the wax provides as it bonds with the paint.
I didn't distress this piece, as she wanted a more modern look, and I left the original hardware untouched, as it has a wonderful patina.
The hutch turned out beautifully and soon will be decorated for fall!
I am a blogger for DecoArt, and they provided some product used in the project.
All opinions are my own.
Until next time...have a wonderful fall weekend!
It turned out beautifully! I have a very similar piece. It belonged to my Nana. She had had it for many year, and I have had for a long time too. I have it out on my patio now, and it stores my outdoor dished, etc. I have been thinking about painting it, and now I know I will. Where is this paint sold?

You can find the paint in stores at Home Depot and Michaels now! You can also buy it from them online.
DeleteI love this update! Great color choice and the original hardware looks so much better against the black. Great job Linda.
ReplyDeleteYour hutch turned out great, Linda.
ReplyDeleteI bet your DIL is loving it!
That turned out great, Linda. I really love a black piece- I think it adds drama and a good pop of interest when you have a black piece of furniture. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteLooks great Linda. Love the hardware too. Very pretty.

Wow! I have a friend who is using DecoArt and we are excited about redoing some pieces with it. This is a great piece and black is a great color to decorate with Fall decor. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Linda! I am sure you are already having fall weather. We are having it all week long. Yay!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI bet your DIL is happy that you did that for her. :)
I agree, it is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great transformation! Love the soft black, I wouldn't have known what to do with that hutch, but you always turn those ugly ducklings into swans! She must be thrilled! xo Karen
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing makeover! DecoArt Paint speaks for itself!! Beautiful job, Linda!!
ReplyDeleteThis looks great, Linda! I love how it looks in black. Such a nice refresh and update for this piece. The hardware suits, too. The lion head pulls really stand out nicely against the black. I have to remember to pick some of this paint up next time I am at Home Depot. I've been wanting to try it.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome transformation! You did a wonderful job!

This turned out super! I bet your DIL is thrilled. How much paint did it take to cover a piece this size? I am so loving this paint. Hugs, Dianne
ReplyDeleteI used a little more than two of the small tubs of carbon paint. I painted the interior and everything has two coats of paint.
DeleteAlso, I used less than one small tub of clear wax.
DeleteLove how great it turned out! I have a hutch that looks just like that one that I'm dying to revamp :)
ReplyDeleteHow much carbon paint did you go through for the entire unit? Thanks!!!
~ Stefanie
It looks amazing! You did a really good job and now have a great piece of furniture. Can't wait to see it decorated for fall. Pam xx
ReplyDeleteI bet your daughter-in-law is thrilled with the transformation, Linda! Her newly painted black hutch is going to look so stylish filled with autumn accents. Well done!
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect re-do Linda! That black just brings it together!
ReplyDeleteLove your re-do Linda!! You did a fabulous job on it. I always love seeing a piece of black furniture in a room, it adds so much sophistication.

ooohhh...that's so beautiful! I haven't used that paint before but I'll keep it in mind for some furniture makeovers I plan to do once we move.
ReplyDeleteLinda a love the almost satin looking finish. I didn't know Deco had chalk paint yea!
ReplyDeleteCarol
Linda the hutch turned out amazing! I have got to give those paints a try. The cream wax too!

I was wondering what were the steps in preparing to paint.. ??
ReplyDeleteThanks..
Hi Kris,
DeleteI just wiped it down to remove dust and dirt...no priming is necessary. If you have wood with a strong stain, they have some stain blocking treatments to prevent bleed-through. You can visit the decoart.com site for lots of hints for using the Chalky Finish paints!
Did you sand the piece before painting?
ReplyDeleteNo, we used chalky paint...no sanding required!
