This week I did a fun project on an area that is long neglected in our home...the stairway! It is used so often, going from our main house level to the upstairs bedrooms and bath, that it deserves a little love!
Last year we removed old carpeting and painted the stairs a medium gray color with white risers. We also painted the walls gray with white trim.
It really brightened the area up!
The stairs lead to a landing with 2 more steps to the hallway, going to the living spaces. I've had a decorative subway banner hung on the wall which I love, but I was ready to decorate this space and get it ready for summer company!
Going down the stairs there are high walls and an unpainted handrail. You can see it is an empty space! We do not want to fill every wall here as we have a family gallery wall in the hallway above and we don't want the area too cluttered. But I have longed wanted to add something to the space above the doorway.
Recently I received the beautiful Gracie Oaks Round Tan Wall Clock from Wayfair!
It is a nice large size (35" top to bottom, with a 32" face), perfectly filling the large space above the doorway! It is cased with wood, and iron accents, with a glass covered face...a substantial, quality piece for our home!
I love the vintage, distressed look...
It looks wonderful as you walk down the stairs!
On the landing...
that I also received from Wayfair.
It comes in a small planter with moss topping...
It fit perfectly in a decorative urn I had! I elevated it on a little green stool,
so it would be totally seen from the lower floor.
I love the realistic look of this topiary!
The landing leads to the family wall gallery...
I also dressed up the stairs by painting and varnishing the stair handrail.
I used a dark gray paint.
And finally...I stenciled the risers with numbers, with black paint...and distressed them.
We are enjoying the new decor for summer!
Until next time...
Oh Linda, your stairway re-do is just perfect! I love everything about it...the gray and white, the gallery wall, and your new clock. We have the same stairway going down into our basement. The carpet on the steps is 31 years old! And our handrail is still unpainted, lol. Did you take the handrail off the wall to paint it? I've also wanted to hang something on that big, tall "wall" above the staircase.
ReplyDeleteLinda loving the updates. I like the rustic look of the clock too. Great idea with numbering the risers too. The sign you've had there is great and love the size.

Thank you, Cindy! We are loving the new look!
DeleteIt looks great Linda! Love the topiary and little stool it sits on! And that clock!!! It's beautiful!

Just perfect!
ReplyDeleteYour stairway update is amazing! And I LOVE that clock! BTW, I have 2 unpainted handrails in my house and every time I use one of them I think I should really do something with these guys, but then I forget about it 10 seconds later. You're pushing me to put it on the Official Home Project List.
ReplyDeleteThey say design is in the details and all your attention to detail from the numbers on the stairs, to the fabulous clock, to the new painted handrail make your new stairway fantastic!! Enjoy your summer, Linda!
ReplyDeleteI love what you have done. xo Laura

Linda, I really like that topiary. I would love a couple for my porch. :) The gallery wall looks great. I also like the numbered steps. Great job. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

Happy day!

Linda what a difference you made with this stairway!! I know I sound boring because I always say the same thing when I come here. But you have such a creative eye! Seriously your vignettes are amazing and you used the same talent with this little makeover.
ReplyDeleteIf we didn't put a runner on our new stairs I would definitely want to add painted numbers. It's such a great look. And I like the additions you added, the painted handrail (no small task--as a painter I know) and topiary and wall clock. Amazing how placing it in a weighty looking urn made it seem more substantive and real looking.
Also I wanted to thank you for reading my recent post. Honestly I feel like slapping a warning on my posts these days, I know they're on the heavy side and so I truly am grateful for your visits. I know that we both feel similar about gratitude and appreciating all the little moments. Sounds like your hubby agrees. I hope all is well with your family Linda and your health too. Sending you love across the miles.
