A Simple Flowerpot Project

Today I am joining my fellow Thrifty Chicks bloggers 

for another fun re-use makeover project! 

For this month's challenge we are upcycling flower pots!

I found this plastic terra cotta style pot at the thrift store for 25 cents 

and decided to give it a little upscaled look. 

 I had a metal pedestal base that had lost its top.

I loved the detail on the base.  

You could also use any suitable type of small pedestal or candle holder.

These two pieces made a great marriage! Permanent glue was used to attach the pot to the pedestal and I was able to leave the water holes open. 

If you are going to use this with a faux plant, drainage holes wouldn't matter.

When it was dry, I started with some paint magic.  

First...a coat of white craft paint that could be used on plastic and metal.

Next, I picked some craft paint colors that I thought would work well to create a statuary look...light beige, gray, a light terra cotta color, and a bright moss green. 

I just used whatever paint I had in my craft stuff.

The white basecoat was brushed on, but the other colors were dabbed with a foam brush or paper toweling, to avoid brush strokes on the finished piece. 

I started with the light beige color...

Then I dabbed and blended the other colors until it had the look I wanted.  You can't mess up...just go back over areas you aren't happy with.

When I was done I brushed on a matte varnish to protect it...

and added a pretty rosemary plant! 

It was simple and a fun way to re-use mismatched pieces!

The detail was highlighted by the paint treatment...
